July 2024 - November 2024

CHIEF OFFICER

Company Name: Anglo Eastern Ship Management (AESM) Germany 

Type of Vessel: Break Bulk/ Passenger/ Research & Training

In July 2024 the management of the SA Agulhas had changed from BSM to Anglo Eastern. The vessel was under refit/ re-activation from lay-up status, and I served as the Chief Officer onboard in command of the vessel in the absence of a Master onboard, therefore I was the “acting Captain” due to reduced manning levels.​ My responsibilities were the same as described below within the BSM organisation in addition to the Master’s duties.

February 2024 - July 2024

CHIEF OFFICER

Type of Vessel: Break Bulk/ Passenger/ Research & Training

Gross Tonnage: 6123.00 T

Our vessel the SA Agulhas, a gem of the South African maritime industry for many years has recently changed its ownership to a German/ South African partnership company J*S Maritime. The vessel is managed by Bernhard Schulte Ship Management (BSM), a well renown and reputable ship management company in the marine industry.

The vessel was on lay-up status for 3 years and once the vessel changed ownership, a drydocking of the vessel was carried out and we are now under repair status (re-activation from lay-up). 

​

My responsibilities as Chief Officer include: Management of deck ratings and officers; maintenance of the vessel; stability; ensuring cargo equipment, lifting appliances and all cargo aspects are in order; ballasting operations; management and oversight of works carried out by contractors; ongoing inspections of vessel and delegation of work to rectify any defects; ensuring permit work systems, risk assessments and all safety aspects are in compliance with company procedures; ensuring all critical equipment are functioning and maintained according to regulations, ensuring the certification and proper testing of equipment, daily work planning, ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of all work carried out; compiling daily reports of all activities carried out onboard, ensuring vessel is supplied with all necessary spares, equipment and tools; management of all vessel inventories and consumables; environmental and garbage management, crew training and overall safety and security of the vessel.

SECOND OFFICER

Type of Vessel: General Cargo/ Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV)

Our company based in the Netherlands provides a number of marine services worldwide including: carriage of general and dry bulk cargoes, offshore and towage, stevedoring, we operate our own ports and terminals, shipbuilding and repairs among other services. The vessels which I sail on are engaged with the carriage of general cargoes between Europe and North America. 


As the Second Mate, I carry out the 12 to 4 navigational watches. My responsibilities include the maintenance and upkeep of: safety equipment including all lifesaving (LSA) and fire-fighting equipment (FFA), greasing and maintenance of all deck and cargo equipment, navigation equipment and documentation, voyage planning and weather routeing, ensuring all nautical publications and charts are kept up to date, daily vessel reporting and assisting the Master and Chief Officer as necessary during cargo operations.

February 2023 - April 2023

SECOND OFFICER

Company Name: SMIT Lamnalco 

Type of Vessel: ASD Tug

Gross Tonnage: 1270.00 T

As Our company provided offshore services to the Coral Sul FLNG Project in Northern Mozambique. During drilling operations for gas offshore on the field, our duties included assisting tankers while berthing and unberthing off the FLNG for loading of gas and we engaged in many other operations such as transfer and safety standby duties.


As the Second Mate, I carried out the 12 to 6 navigational watches. My responsibilities included the maintenance and upkeep of all navigation equipment and documentation, voyage planning and weather routeing, ensuring all nautical publications and charts were kept up to date, ship’s hospital and all medication/medical equipment onboard, daily vessel reporting and assisting the Master and Chief Officer as necessary during operations.

My responsibilities included: passage planning, maintenance and upkeep of all bridge equipment and records, vessel reports, the designated medical officer onboard, cargo watch during port operations, assisting the Master and Chief Officer as necessary.

My responsibilities included the maintenance of all life-saving and fire fighting appliances, port documentation, management of bond store, reports for drills and training, cargo watch during port operations, assisting the Master and Chief Officer as necessary.

August 2020 - October 2021

ENTREPRENEUR

Company Name: Sailor Rock & Surf Fishing - Online & Retail Fishing Tackle Store

As an entrepreneur and a fishing fanatic it was my dream to own a fishing tackle store. Due to Covid and the business being a seasonal enterprise it had been affected by many factors, however due to the protests in South Africa our sales were heavily impacted and unfortunately, we had no option but to close down. 

February 2020 - July 2020

MARINE PROJECT MANAGER

Company Name: ISS Palumbo Mozambique

Responsibilities: Marine & Cargo Operations & Vessel Management

Vessels Managed: Landing Craft Tanks (LCT’s) & Tugs

As the Project Manager, I was responsible for all day-to-day marine operations which included the scheduling, cargo operations, load planning, technical and onboard management of two vessels; marine agency operations, customs and port formalities; liaison with port authorities, clients and third parties regarding cargo; safety; procurement and overseeing all finances related to marine operations. I managed a team of less than 10 persons ashore and crew of about 20 persons onboard. We were conducting operations in Pemba in support of the Oil and Gas Project in Palma, Northern Mozambique. Our Landing Craft Tug was the first of its kind carrying cargo, fuel, and provisions mostly ro-ro to the Afungi Site for Total, ENI & Saipem.

As the Second Mate, I carried out the 12 to 4 navigational watch. My responsibilities included passage planning, chart corrections, port documentation, assisting the Master with all vessel paperwork, office communication and reports, closing out of any deficiencies during inspections, assist Chief Officer with management of vessel and crew to ensure the vessel was maintained according to company, client and international standards. Our tug was also involved in the Oil and Gas Project in Northern Mozambique. Vessel operations included towing of barges and responsibility of a standby tug.

As the Second Mate, I carried out the 12 to 4 navigational watch. My responsibilities included passage planning, chart corrections, port documentation, and assisting the Master with vessel paperwork. During this voyage we were involved in towing operations to Mozambique. 

December 2017 - May 2018

SHEQ OFFICER

Company Name: AMSOL  

Responsibilities: SBM Terminal, Vessel and Diving Operations

​

As the Safety officer for the SBM and all terminal operations for our client SAPREF, I was responsible for all safety related aspects for over 100 personnel. Tasks included closing out of safety observations and near miss reports, accident investigations, vessel and site visits, office drills, overseeing all major operations, onboard training for crew, ensuring we meet our KPI’s, client presentations and development of new procedures and training.

LECTURER

Institution: Durban University of Technology

Subjects: Electronic Navigation Systems (ENS) Operational Level, Electronic Navigation Systems (ENS) Management Level, Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)

I had developed and facilitated courses for mariners from trainee level to Masters and Marine Pilots, in addition to the courses I had lectured I had developed pre-safety courses (4 modules) which was to be included in the universities new programme. 

December 2016 - February 2017

During this project we were involved in dredging operations at the Port of Durban, I served on both vessels as Mate. My responsibilities onboard were to manage the crew, their shifts and working hours. Communications with Port Control and Barges when planning and carrying out operations, all safety aspects of the vessels including drills and training, maintenance of the vessel and its equipment and assisting the Master as necessary.

Our vessel was engaged in long-lining operations around the Marion Islands for Patagonian Toothfish. My responsibilities included a 6 on 6 off hour watch during fishing operations and 12 to 4 watch during sailing, other duties included assisting the Master with all reports and paperwork as necessary.
